Having finally carved out some time to dive into Compulsion Games' latest offering, South of Midnight, after a hectic lead-up to launch, I can confidently say that this Xbox title has well and truly sunk its teeth into me. Clocking in over 20 hours in my first 2 days in the bayou-inspired world, I've been thoroughly impressed by the journey of Hazel and her mystical journey.

From the get-go, South of Midnight establishes itself as a narrative powerhouse. The sheer volume of cutscenes and storytelling might initially raise an eyebrow, but they serve a crucial purpose: breathing life into the diverse and intriguing cast of characters that Hazel encounters. Each interaction feels meaningful, adding layers to the overarching mystery and drawing you deeper into the Southern Gothic charm of the game.

While the story takes centre stage, the combat system is no slouch. It's a fluid and fast-paced affair that manages to feel both intuitive and satisfying. There's a natural flow to the encounters, making it easy to pick up but offering enough depth to keep things engaging throughout those longer play sessions.

Visually, South of Midnight is a treat for the eyes. It delivers exactly what you'd expect from a modern AAA title, and then some. I often found myself pausing simply to soak in the breathtaking environments. The art direction is superb, creating a world that is both beautiful and atmospheric, perfectly complementing the narrative's tone.

Overall, my time with South of Midnight has been overwhelmingly positive. It's a captivating experience that blends compelling storytelling with engaging gameplay and stunning visuals and It's certainly a journey I wholeheartedly recommend, and we have to give it an overall score of 9 out of 10.
