Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO, the latest entry in the hit Dragon Ball fighting game series, has finally arrived, bringing with it intense battles and some truly stunning visuals. Thanks to the legends at Bandai Namco, I was lucky enough to receive a copy of the game for review and I'm happy to say that the game perfectly pays homage to the classic Budokai Tenkaichi series while introducing new features and mechanics.
From the moment you boot up the game, you'll feel right at home. The iconic Dragon Ball characters are all here with one of the biggest character rosters to date, ready to unleash their powerful attacks. The game's combat system is a blend of classic fighting game mechanics and unique Dragon Ball elements. You can perform combos, block attacks, and execute special moves that will leave your opponents stunned (Kamehameha anyone?). However, the real magic lies in the game's destructible environments. As you battle, the arena will crumble and collapse, adding a dynamic and unpredictable element to the fights and feeling just like the battles we all know so well from the show.
The game's story mode offers a fresh take on familiar Dragon Ball storylines. While it may not be as in-depth as some of the previous games, it provides a solid foundation for the game's combat system and character interactions while covering the iconic story moments. The ability to make choices that impact the story's outcome in different ways to the tv series adds a good layer of replayability to the game.
Visually, Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO is a stunning achievement and captures the Dragon Ball world amazingly. The character models are incredibly detailed, and the animations flow beautifully. The game's special effects are over-the-top as we'd expect and visually impressive, truly capturing the essence of the Dragon Ball universe. The game also offers accessible control assistance options, so whether you're a seasoned veteran or a newcomer, you'll be battling it out with your friends online in no time.
Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO is a must-play for any fan of the series. Its fast-paced combat, stunning visuals, and engaging story mode make it a standout title in the series and one we had to change our scoring system for, as it came in OVER 9000! (9/10).
