Dragon Age: The Veilguard Review

Dragon Age: The Veilguard

The team at BioWare recently sent over a copy of Dragon Age: The Veilguard on Xbox Series S for review. With Dragon Age: Origins being the last Dragon Age game we played back in 2009; we are happy to report that it's nothing like I expected and has blown all expectations out of the water so far. Dragon Age: The Veilguard marks a bold and exciting evolution for the series, seamlessly blending the classic BioWare storytelling we've come to expect from past games with a thrilling, action-packed combat system. This shift to real-time combat, while initially surprising, has changed the overall feel of the Dragon Age games, offering a dynamic and engaging experience that pushes the boundaries of the genre and removes the pause style combat that some feel can break the immersion during the game.

The game's visuals are simply breathtaking, with stunning environments and intricate character designs that bring the world of Thedas to life. This was another surprise as previously the games have felt a little underwhelming comparing to some AAA titles when it comes to visuals. The attention to detail in both the main story and side quests is amazing, offering a rich and immersive experience that rewards exploration and player choice.

When you load up a new game, you are presented with character customisation options, and these are pretty extensive. As usual this led to me spending a good hour or so playing around with options before I dove into the game. The companions, each with their own distinct personalities and backstories, add depth and emotional weight to the narrative on a level I've only felt previously when I played through Senua's Saga: Hellblade II. The ability to forge strong bonds with these companions, as well as the impact of player choices on the story, further enhances the sense of immersion and connectedness with the characters.

While the game's combat system is undoubtedly a highlight, the storytelling remains the heart of Dragon Age. The intricate plot, filled with twists and turns, keeps players engaged from start to finish. The exploration of ancient elven ruins, the confrontation with powerful adversaries, and the unravelling of the mysteries surrounding Solas create a truly epic adventure.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard

In conclusion, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a massive win for BioWare. It successfully blends classic RPG elements with modern action gameplay, resulting in what I would put down as a truly captivating and unforgettable experience. Whether you're a longtime fan of the series or new to the Dragon Age universe, The Veilguard is a must-play title that will leave a lasting impression, and we have to give it a solid 9 out of 10.
